Captain Marvel the movie was released to theaters March 2019 and produced by Marvel Studio et. al. The movie stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers a.k.a Captain Marvel. Also in the movie is Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, and Jude Law as Yon-Rogg to name a few.

What is the movie about?

The movie is about Captain Marvels origin story combined with a Kree-Skrull war plot which Carol Danvers unwittingly participates and also gives us our first look at Ronin’s rise to power.

Captain Marvel # 18

Captain Marvel strays from canon in some key areas. Prior to Carol Danvers becoming Captain Marvel in the comics she had a decent run as Ms. Marvel. The creation of Captain Marvel from Ms. Marvel was also much different in the comics. It seems Marvel studios needed to use the Tesseract in order to link Captain Marvel with the rest of the movie canon. The movie does include the character MAR-VELL but instead of being the original Captain Marvel, MAR-VELL is a Kree scientist trying to end the Kree-Skrull war.

The Review

Story – 3 Stars

I thought the story was good. The entire beginning could have been written differently. The plot spent some time with Vers (Carol Danvers) on Hala training as a Kree soldier. The Supreme Intelligence send Vers and her team on a mission to extract a Kree spy from the Skrull. This entire sequence was too long and barely relevant. It seemed it was used to introduce the shape-shifting ability of the Skrull and get Vers to Earth.

There were other bits and pieces which could have been cut and involving the tesseract was an unnecessary tie in. The end credit scene which ties Captain Marvel to the next Avengers movie would have been all the tie in necessary.

Cast – 4 Stars

There isn’t much to say about the cast. It was many of the same cast as other MCU movies. I think Brie Larson did a nice job. She had a few funny looks throughout the movie like she was staring at something off-screen instead of at a person and her fake running could use some work. All in all, I think she is a fine Captain Marvel and a nice addition to the MCU.

My only complaint is I confuse Jude Law with Paul Bettany. I thought Jude did a great job and I’m big fan, but while I was watching Captain Marvel I just kept thinking he was the same actor which played Vision. That more my issue than anything else but I doubt I’m the only one.

Costumes – 4 Stars

The costumes were good. I liked how the helmet and face masks formed on the Kree uniforms. The 1990’s costumes and set were absolutely brilliant. The scenes where Vers land in the Blockbuster and then goes to Radio Shack were stunning.

The only part of the costume I didn’t love is when the Kree helmet formed over Carol Danvers it made her hair into a mohawk. I would think Captain Marvel would want her hair protected.

Directing – 4 Stars

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directed Captain Marvel. The cinematography was very good. The sets were cool. The lighting and music were not distracting. The special effects were very good. I thought Captain Marvels powers seems very natural. The timing of the fighting, weapons, and other coreography seemed very natural.

As stated above I belive there could have been alot more cut out of this movie. I don’t know what happens behind the scenes but I’d love to see a directors cut and see hiw they might differ. Boden and Fleck directed a few Billions (Showtime) episodes which is one if the best shows of the last couple years.

Technology – 3.5 Stars

The technology in Captain Marvel was mostly a reuse of other marvel movies. The weapons were pretty cool, especially the wrist thing Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) uses to try and strangle Captain Marvel.

Mar-Vell was experimenting with faster than light travel. I find it hard to believe FTL technology was unknown to the Kree; after all, they appear directly over the earth. Without FTL the Guardians of the Galaxy movie would be very boring and Thor would still be in his spaceship after Asguard’s distruction.

I’m interested to hear your comments if you agree or disagree.

Originality – 4 Stars

If they would have kept with the canon I would have awarded 5 stars automatically becuse this movie would have inherited Stan Lee’s originality.

Unfortunately the writers changed key points of Carol Danvers origin story and changed the Mar-Vell character completely. For me these changes really dumbed down the plot and created unnecessary tie-ins with the other Marvel movies.

Captain Marvel is still an original character so the changes based on the original story doesn’t ruin the movie.

Conclution

All in all, I enjoyed Captain Marvel. Was it the best superhero movie? No. Will I watch it again when it is available to rent? Heck yea! It’s always fun to watch Marvel movies a second time and find all the things you missed before.

I can’t help being a geek and a superhero fan.

Thanks for reading my review!
